What the card shows
A young traveller walks toward the edge of a cliff, eyes raised to the sky. A small bundle hangs from a staff over one shoulder; a white rose, a sign of innocence, rests in the other hand. A small white dog leaps at the traveller’s heels — as a companion, a warning, or both. The sun is high and the mountains behind are far away: the hard climbing has not started yet.
Pamela Colman Smith drew the card as a moment just before the step. Nothing has gone wrong and nothing has been proven. That is the whole point of the Fool.
Upright meaning
Upright, the Fool signals a fresh start: a new job, a move, a relationship, a creative project or simply a new way of seeing your life. It favours curiosity over certainty and asks you to trust the process more than the plan.
The Fool is not stupidity. It is the wisdom of beginners — the willingness to look a little foolish in order to learn something real. When it appears, the next chapter is usually closer than it seems, and the main obstacle is the wish to know everything before you begin.
Reversed meaning
Reversed, the Fool’s energy struggles to find its footing. Sometimes this looks like recklessness: jumping without checking the ground, spending, promising or leaving on impulse. Sometimes it looks like the opposite — freezing at the edge, waiting for a guarantee that never comes.
Ask which of the two you are closer to. The card reversed rarely says “never”; it says “not like this”: prepare one honest step, then take it.
In love and relationships
In love, the Fool brings lightness and new chemistry. For singles it can point to an unexpected meeting or a new way of dating — less scripted, more playful. In a relationship it invites you to rediscover adventure together instead of repeating the same routine.
The shadow side is avoidance of commitment. If you are asking whether someone is ready to settle down, the Fool suggests enthusiasm rather than structure — wonderful for a beginning, less reliable as a promise.
In work and money
At work the Fool favours new ventures, career changes, freelancing and learning something from zero. It is a good sign for a first job, a startup idea or a bold application.
With money it asks for both courage and a safety net. The card supports investing in a new direction, but not gambling. Keep a small reserve, then move.
As advice
Begin before you feel ready, but look where you put your feet. Choose curiosity over control for one week and notice what opens up.
In Marseille and Thoth
In the Tarot de Marseille the card is Le Mat, the unnumbered wanderer pushed along by an animal, often read as pure, undirected energy. In the Crowley–Harris Thoth deck The Fool is a horned, green spirit of the air surrounded by symbols of potential, read as the spark before creation.

- Which small step would let me test this idea safely?
