The Tower Tarot Card Meaning

The Tower tarot card from the Rider–Waite–Smith deck: a tall tower on a rocky peak struck by lightning, its crown blown off, flames bursting from windows, two figures falling.

The Tower is lightning striking a structure built on false ground. It is sudden, shocking and often unwanted — and it clears away what could not stand, so something truer can be built.

  • Number:XVI
  • Keywords:upheaval, revelation, sudden change, breakthrough
  • Reversed:avoided disaster, fear of change, slow collapse
  • Astrology:Mars
  • Yes or no:No — prepare for change

What the card shows

A tall grey tower stands on a jagged peak. Lightning strikes its top, knocking off a golden crown; flames pour from the windows and two people fall headfirst through the dark. Small flames, like Hebrew yods, rain down around them.

The tower looked strong. The lightning shows it was not.

Upright meaning

Upright, the Tower signals sudden change: an unexpected event, a revelation, the collapse of a plan or belief. It can be frightening, but it reveals truth. What falls was unstable; what remains is real.

After the Tower comes the Star. Breakdown often comes before breakthrough.

Reversed meaning

Reversed, the Tower may show a crisis avoided or postponed, or a change happening slowly instead of all at once. It can also describe fear of the change you know is needed.

If something has to fall, it is gentler to take it down yourself.

In love and relationships

In love the Tower can mean a sudden breakup, a shocking discovery or an argument that reveals what has been hidden. For some couples it is the crisis that finally clears the air.

For singles, it may shake up old ideas about what you want.

In work and money

At work, expect sudden changes: layoffs, restructuring or a project collapsing. It can also free you from a role you had outgrown.

With money, keep a reserve and avoid risky bets. Unexpected expenses are possible.

As advice

Do not defend what is already falling. Let the truth in, protect what matters, and rebuild on firmer ground.

In Marseille and Thoth

In the Tarot de Marseille the card is La Maison Dieu, the House of God, its top struck off by a feather of fire, two figures on the ground — sometimes read as liberation. In the Thoth deck The Tower is linked with Mars: the Eye of Horus over a shattering structure, destruction that purifies.
